چکیده

Flow based upscaling of absolute permeability has become an important step in practical simulations of flow through heterogeneous formations. The central idea is to compute upscaled, grid-block permeability from fine scale solutions of the flow equation. Such solutions can be either local in each gridblock or global in the whole domain. It is well-known that the grid-block permeability may be strongly influenced by the boundary conditions imposed on the flow equations and the size of the grid-blocks. We show that the upscaling errors due to both effects manifest as the resonance between the small physical scales of the media and the artificial size of the grid blocks. To obtain precise error estimates, we study the scale-up of single phase steady flows through media with periodic small scale heterogeneity. As demonstrated by our numerical experiments, these estimates are also useful for understanding the upscaling of general random media. It is further shown that the oversampling technique introduced in our previous work can be used to reduce the resonance error and obtain boundary-condition independent, grid-block permeability. Some misunderstandings in scale up studies are also clarified in this work.

Permeability upscaling in fractured reservoirs using different optimized mother wavelets at each level

We use a multi-resolution analysis based on a wavelet transform to upscale a 3D fractured reservoir. This paper describes a 3D, single-phase, and black-oil geological model (GM) that is used to simulate naturally-fractured reservoirs. The absolute permeability and porosity of GM is upscaled by all the possible combinations of Haar, Bior1.3, and Db4 wavelets in three levels of coarsening. The ap...

Single-phase Near-well Permeability Upscaling and Productivity Index Calculation Methods

Reservoir models with many grid blocks suffer from long run time; it is hence important to deliberate a method to remedy this drawback. Usual upscaling methods are proved to fail to reproduce fine grid model behaviors in coarse grid models in well proximity. This is attributed to rapid pressure changes in the near-well region. Standard permeability upscaling methods are limited to systems with ...

Upscaling of Geocellular Models for Reservoir Flow Simulation: A Review of Recent Progress

A variety of approaches for the upscaling of detailed geocellular models for flow simulation are reviewed. Local, extended local, global and quasi global techniques for the calculation of equivalent permeability and transmissibility are discussed. Specialized procedures for permeability upscaling in the vicinity of wells are also described. Flow-based grid generation techniques, in which a curv...

A Comparison Study Between an Adaptive Quadtree Grid and Uniform Grid Upscaling for Reservoir Simulation

An adaptive quadtree grid generation algorithm is developed and applied for tracer and multiphase flow in channelized heterogeneous porous media. Adaptivity was guided using two different approaches. In the first approach, wavelet transformation was used to generate a refinement field based on permeability variations. The second approach uses flow information based on the solution of an initial...

An operator - based approach to upscaling thepressure

Permeability and porosity parameters of a porous medium are known only in a statistical sense. For risk assessment, one must perform multiple ow simulations of a single site, varying these input parameters. Because multiple simulations of large sites are computationally prohibitive, upscaling from ne to coarse scales is necessary. Traditional upscaling techniques determine a new eeective or ups...
